Agen too strong for Castres

Home victory

Agen beat Castres 20-9 in their Top 14 match at Stade Armandie on Friday night, scoring a try to nil and five penalty goals to three.

The two clubs were locked on 33 points on the Top 14 table. This victory puts Agen ahead and, at least temporarily, closer to qualification for the knock-out stages and also for next season's Heineken Cup.

It was cold in Agen - -2°C at the kick-off but watched by 9 000 fiery spectators who were warm ion their congratulations of Pépito Elhorga and his family on the birth of a third child. Despite the cold and the tough conditions underfoot, the match was lively and exciting.

Castres started off well and scored first when fullback Romain Teulet kicked a straightforward penalty goal. Four minutes later Agen were off-side and Teulet made it 6-0.

When Pablo Canavosio was penalised for holding on in the tackle a minute later, Jérôme Miquel  made it 6-3. Miquel levelled the scores and then booted two more to put the home side up 12-6 at the break, a scoreline which flattered them.

Agen got on top and scored first in the second half when Elhorga had something else to celebrate with a try in the right corner.

Teulet kicked a penalty goal next and then Miquel rounded off the scoring with a fifth penalty.

Three players received yellow cards in the match, first Rupeni Caucau and then, when they fought, the two captains - Kees Meeuws and Lionel Nallet .
